Reaction: CDO1:Fe2+ oxidises L-Cys to 3-Sulfinoalanine

- in pathway: Degradation of cysteine and homocysteine
Oxidation of the thiol moiety of cysteine yields sulfinoalanine, which itself is processed to hypotaurine by an as of yet uncharacterized enzyme in humans . Whether further oxidation of hypotaurine to taurine needs an enzyme is unknown at present (Ye et al. 2007).
Reaction - small molecule participants:
3-Sulfinoalanine [cytosol]
L-Cys [cytosol]
O2 [cytosol]
