Phosphorylated S6K1 in turn phosphorylates eIF4G, a component of the protein complex eIF4F, which is involved in the recognition of the mRNA cap, ATP-dependent unwinding of 5'-terminal secondary structure and recruitment of mRNA to the ribosome. Serine residues 1108, 1148, 1192 of the EIF4G1 isoform in Raught et al. (2000) correspond to serine residues 1147, 1185, and 1231 of the UniProt reference sequence.
