Glutamate from the mitochondrial matrix is transported back into the cytosol, to be loaded into synaptic vesicles. Solute carrier 25 is a mitochondrial glutamate transporter known to transport glutamate, but it is unclear if this protein is involved in the transport of glutamate in neurons (Iioka et al. 1995).
