Reaction: ZIP7 mediates zinc efflux from the endoplasmic reticulum
- in pathway: Zinc influx into cells by the SLC39 gene family
The human gene SLC39A7 encodes the zinc transporter ZIP7 (HKE4, Histidine-rich membrane protein Ke4). It is expressed in many tissues but especially in liver, kidney and the hormonal tissues apart from brain. Unlike the other members of the LZT subfamily, ZIP7 is localized to intracellular membranes of the ER rather than the plasma membrane and mediates zinc efflux into the cytoplasm (Taylor KM et al, 2004).
