Reaction: Hypochlorous acid (HOCl) reacts with unsaturated lipid to form lipid chlorohydrins
HOCl reacts with the double bonds of unsaturated lipids and cholesterol to give chlorohydrins (RCH(Cl)-CH(OH)R'). Chlorohydrins, if formed in cell membranes, could cause disruption to membrane structure, since they are more polar than the parent fatty acids (Winterbourn CC et al. 1992; van den Berg JJ et al 1993).
