Reaction: SRC phosphorylates GluN2 (GRIN2) subunits of NMDARs
- in pathway: Long-term potentiation
Non-receptor tyrosine kinase SRC phosphorylates GluN2 (GRIN2, NR2) subunits of the GluN2-containing NMDA receptors. This increases NMDA receptor open time and activity (Yu et al. 1997) and plays a role in long-term potentiation. SRC-mediated phosphorylation of NMDA receptors (NMDARs) is reduced in schizophrenia. Activation of ERBB4 signaling negatively regulates phosphorylation of NMDARs by SRC. ERBB4 signaling is hyperactivated in schizophrenia (Pitcher et al. 2011, Banerjee et al. 2015).
