Reaction: CaMKII phosphorylates AMPA receptor

- in pathway: Long-term potentiation
CaMKII, activated by NMDA receptor-mediated calcium influx, translocates to the postsynaptic density (PSD) by binding to the NMDA receptor and phosphorylates AMPA receptor subunit GluA1 (GRIA1, GluR1) and auxiliary proteins. CaMKII-mediated phosphorylation of AMPA receptors enhances association of AMPA the PSD proteins and increases conductance of AMPA receptors (McGlade-McCulloh et al. 1993, Mammen et al. 1997, Strack et al. 1997, Barria et al. 1997, Tomita et al. 2005, Opazo et al. 2010).
