Reaction: L-Glutamate binds GRM1 (mGluR1)

- in pathway: Sensory perception of sweet, bitter, and umami (glutamate) taste
In taste bud cells, L-glutamate binds a truncated isoform of GRM1 (mGluR1) that has about 100x lower affinity for L-glutamate than the full-length, brain-expressed isoform does (inferred from rat homologs). Binding of L-glutamate to GRM1 activates an incompletely characterized signaling cascade that results in depolarization of the taste bud cell.
