Reaction: N binds to heme

- in pathway: SARS-CoV-2 targets host intracellular signalling and regulatory pathways
SARS-CoV-2 nucleocapsid (N) protein can bind to heme, as identified through shotgun proteomics. We placed the interaction in the cytosol as the most likely compartment because of N abundance. However, possible N protein binding to heme in the nucleus might have an important implication in viral and cellular transcriptional regulation since heme regulates multiple transcription factors in the nucleus, modulating the expression of various genes (Lechuga et al, 2021).
