Binding of SARS-CoV-2 ORF9b to TOMM70 prevents the recognition of native Hsp90 and chaperone-associated TOMM70 substrates, thus suppressing innate immunity. This binding is abolished by apparent phosphorylation of ORF9b at S53, possibly by host DMPK type kinases. In the B.1.1.7 UK variant ORF9b expression is highly enhanced, probably overwhelming host kinase activity (Brandherm et al, 2021; Krogan et al, 2021; Bouhaddou et al, 2020, suppl.).
