Reaction: Basolateral transport of Cipro to extracellular space
- in pathway: Ciprofloxacin ADME
Basolateral efflux of Cipro zwitterion is a process that needs to be helped by membrane transport proteins, as diffusion of the polar molecule through the plasma membrane is unlikely. When cytosolic concentrations are high Cipro zwitterion is transported by an unknown protein through the basolateral membrane. Membrane transporters of the major facilitator type act in response to chemiosmotic gradients. The facilitator SLCO2B1 (OATP2B1) is localized in basolateral membranes of jejunum epithelial cells and is a possible candidate for catalyzing the basolateral efflux of Cipro from epithelial cells (Keiser et al, 2017; Chen et al, 2020).
