Reaction: SLC22A8 transports Cipro into renal cell

- in pathway: Ciprofloxacin ADME
Because of its high renal clearance, ciprofloxacin (Cipro) is probably not reabsorbed by renal tubular cells. In addition to glomerular secretion, Cipro is also secreted contraluminally by tubular cells (reviewed by Sörgel & Kinzig, 1993). The organic anion transporter SLC22A8 (hOAT3) is highly expressed in kidney and brain (Motohashi et al, 2002). Cipro interacts with SLC22A8. In mice, it inhibits mOAT3-mediated transport of estrone-3-sulfate competitively (VanWert et al, 2008; reviewed in Burckhardt, 2012).
