Reaction: p-PKR dimer phosphorylates MAPT
- in pathway: PKR-mediated signaling
Activated PKR phosphorylates the 2N4F isoform of microtubule-associated protein tau (tau-F, tau-8, MAPT-8) at several serine and threonine residues. In neurons phosphorylated tau dissociates from microtubules, leaving them unstable, and accumulates outside the axon. Accumulation and self-assembly of tau are parts of so-called tau pathology in several neurodegenerative diseases (Reimer et al, 2021).
