Reaction: p-PKR dimer phosphorylates SNCA

- in pathway: PKR-mediated signaling
Activated protein kinase R (PKR, EIF2AK2) can phosphorylate alpha-synuclein (SNCA) on S129 and other residues. In synucleopathies (Parkinson disease, Lewy body dementias), about 90% of aggregated SNCA found in inclusion bodies are phosphorylated. Inhibition or overexpression of PKR in cells has decreasing or increasing effect, respectively, on cellular degeneration (Reimer et al, 2018; Reimer et al, 2022).
