Reaction: p-PKR dimer phosphorylates HIV tat

Activated protein kinase R (PKR, EIF2AK2) phosphorylates HIV tat on T23, T40, S46, S62, and S68, preventing nuclear localization of viral tat, disrupting its binding to TAR RNA, and inhibiting its interaction with cyclin T1 (Brand et al, 1997; Yoon et al, 2015). However, there are contradictory findings on tat ability to bind TAR after phosphorylation (Endo-Munoz et al, 2005).
